Beatrice snapped, “Then our things are inside.”
“Your belongings are in storage,” Harrison said. “Retrieve them after paying the fees and obeying the protective order.”
“This is theft!” she screamed.
Evelyn handed the binder to an officer. “No. Theft is forging a signature for a loan, submitting fake invoices, and transferring over three hundred thousand dollars from a company you do not own.”
Julian stared at Beatrice.
She stared back.
For the first time, they looked afraid of each other.
The officer faced Julian. “Julian Vance, you are under arrest for unlawful confinement, forgery, identity theft, and financial fraud.”
As the handcuffs closed, he looked at me in disbelief. “You planned this?”
“No,” I said. “You did. I kept the evidence.”
Beatrice ran toward the taxi. The second officer caught her before she reached it.
She twisted around, shrieking, “I am that baby’s grandmother!”
I covered Nora’s back with one hand.
“No. You are the woman who ordered her mother locked away.”
The neighbors watched them enter separate police cars, their tagged suitcases abandoned on the pavement.
Eight months later, Julian pleaded guilty. He received four years in prison and was ordered to pay restitution. Beatrice received eighteen months for conspiracy and fraud. The court sold her condo and jewelry to recover part of what they had stolen.
My divorce was final before Nora learned to crawl.
I used the sale proceeds to buy a smaller home overlooking a quiet lake. No marble floors. No cold guest rooms. No doors that locked from the outside.
On Nora’s first birthday, I carried her onto the porch at sunrise. She reached for the light on the water, laughing as though the world had never been cruel.
Harrison once asked whether I regretted taking everything from them.
I looked at my daughter, safe in my arms.
“I didn’t take their home,” I said. “I stopped them from living inside mine.”
