“Mom, please don’t take those capsules. Dad said they’re supposed to make you go to sleep forever.”

For seven years, my son Mateo had never spoken a single word. Not “Mom.” Not “water.” Not even “I’m scared.” Doctors had examined him, therapists had worked with him, and specialists had repeatedly told me there was nothing physically wrong with his voice. They believed some deep emotional barrier was preventing him from speaking.
