Grant came back onto the phone.
“Dad, this isn’t funny.”
Dad smiled faintly.
“I agree.”
His smile disappeared.
“It isn’t.”
Vanessa’s breathing became audible.
“Dad, we got the paperwork.”
“I know.”
“You don’t understand.”
“Oh, I understand perfectly.”
Dad picked up his coffee again.
“You two called my daughter at six-thirty in the morning and told her I was dead.”
Neither of them answered.
Dad took a sip.
“Then you told her my house belonged to you.”
Still nothing.
“You told her my truck belonged to you. My accounts. My belongings. You told her she wasn’t welcome in her childhood home anymore.”
His voice remained remarkably calm.
“And then you told her I had specifically excluded her from my will.”
Grant finally said, “Dad, we thought—”
“No.”
Dad cut him off.
“You didn’t think.”
The word landed heavily.
“You assumed.”
Vanessa started crying.
But Dad wasn’t moved.
“Where are you?” he asked.
Vanessa hesitated.
“At the house.”
“Of course you are.”
Dad leaned back.
“How did you get inside?”
“We have keys.”
“You have keys to the front door.”
Vanessa said nothing.
Dad nodded slowly.
“So you didn’t break in.”
“No.”
“Good.”
He glanced at me.
“That saves me one phone call.”
I had no idea what he meant.
Neither did Vanessa.
“What phone call?” she asked.
“To the sheriff.”
Silence.
Grant immediately became defensive.
“Why would you call the sheriff? We’re your children.”
Dad’s expression hardened.
“Exactly.”
He looked at me.
“I’ve spent seventy-four years learning that being related to someone doesn’t make them trustworthy.”
Vanessa’s voice cracked.
“Dad, please.”
Dad didn’t respond.
Instead, he asked a completely different question.
“Did you go into my office?”
Vanessa didn’t answer quickly enough.
Dad’s jaw tightened.
“You did.”
“We were looking for the will.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“You were looking for the version of the will you hoped existed.”
Grant muttered something under his breath.
Dad heard it.
“Say it louder.”
“I said we were trying to make sure everything was handled.”
“Before I was even dead?”
Grant didn’t answer.
Dad laughed once.
It wasn’t a happy laugh.
It was the kind of laugh people use when something is so absurd that anger has temporarily run out of words.
“You two are unbelievable.”
Vanessa began crying harder.
“Dad, we were scared.”
“Scared of what?”
“That you were going to leave everything to Natalie.”
Dad looked at me.
I didn’t say anything.
He looked back at the phone.
“And that frightened you enough to kill me before breakfast?”
“Dad!”
“That’s what you did.”
His voice suddenly became colder.
“You didn’t just lie about my death. You planned around it.”
Grant tried to interrupt.
“We didn’t know you were—”
“Alive?”
Dad raised an eyebrow.
“Yes. That part is becoming obvious.”
I almost smiled.
Dad had always been sarcastic when he was angry.
When I was a child, I’d once broken a lamp playing indoor baseball.
He’d stared at the broken lamp for ten seconds before saying, “Well, at least we know the lamp lost.”
This was the same voice.
Only this time, there was no humor behind it.
Vanessa whispered, “Who told you?”
Dad’s eyes narrowed.
“Told me what?”
“That we were coming.”
Dad glanced at me.
Then toward the hallway.
Then back at the phone.
“No one.”
Vanessa was silent.
Dad continued.
“You two made one enormous mistake.”
“What mistake?”
“You assumed I was helpless.”
I saw something in his face I’d never seen before.
Not anger.
Not disappointment.
Something deeper.
Regret.
Not for himself.
For his children.
Dad had spent his entire life believing family could survive almost anything.
Apparently, he’d finally learned there was something it couldn’t survive.
Greed without shame.
Vanessa said, “Dad, if you’re really alive, then we need to talk in person.”
“No.”
“Dad—”
“You need to leave my house.”
“But—”
“Immediately.”
Grant shouted, “You can’t kick us out!”
Dad smiled.
“I can.”
“You said the house would go to us!”
“I said nothing of the kind.”
“But the papers—”
“What papers?”
Grant stopped.
Dad leaned forward.
“The ones you found?”
“Yes.”
“Interesting.”
His eyes met mine.
“Because those aren’t the documents I changed yesterday.”
Vanessa’s voice trembled.
“What did you change?”
Dad didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at me.
“Natalie.”
“Yes?”
“Get dressed.”
I frowned.
“Why?”
“We’re going to Harold’s.”
I knew immediately that this wasn’t a casual visit.
Harold wasn’t just Dad’s oldest friend.
He was also the man Dad trusted with every legal document he didn’t want sitting around the house.
I grabbed my coat.
Dad stood.
Before leaving, he picked up his phone.
“One more thing.”
Vanessa sounded desperate now.
“Dad?”
“I want you and Grant to stay exactly where you are.”
“What?”
“You heard me.”
Dad’s voice became firm.
“Don’t touch anything else.”
He paused.
“And don’t leave.”
Grant laughed nervously.
“You can’t order us around.”
Dad replied calmly.
“I don’t have to.”
Then he ended the call.
I stared at him.
“What did you do yesterday?”
Dad walked toward the front door.
“Something I should have done ten years ago.”
“What?”
He opened the door.
“Protected myself from my own children.”
The drive to Harold’s house took twenty minutes.
Neither of us spoke much.
The morning sun was barely above the trees.
Everything looked strangely normal.
People walked their dogs.
A school bus stopped at the corner.
A woman in a red coat carried groceries from her car.
Meanwhile, my sister was sitting inside my father’s house, apparently waiting to inherit everything.
I finally broke the silence.
“Dad.”
“Hmm?”
“Did you really change your will yesterday?”
He kept his eyes on the road.
“Yes.”
“To what?”
“You’ll find out.”
I frowned.
“That’s not an answer.”
“It is the only one you’re getting until Harold is present.”
I looked out the window.
“Did you know Vanessa was planning this?”
“No.”
“Then how did you know to change everything yesterday?”
Dad was quiet.
Then he said something that made my stomach tighten.
“Because yesterday, I found out something about your sister.”
“What?”
“I’ll tell you when Harold is here.”
That was all.
When we arrived, Harold was already waiting outside.
He was seventy-six, tall and thin, with white hair and the permanent squint of a man who had spent too many years fishing in bright sunlight.
He walked toward us before Dad had even shut off the engine.
“I assume they made the call.”
Dad nodded.
Harold looked at me.
“How much did they tell you?”
“That Dad was dead.”
Harold sighed.
“Of course.”
He opened the front door.
“Come inside.”
We followed him into his study.
The room smelled like old books and coffee.
A large wooden desk sat beneath the window.
On it were three folders.
One was blue.
One was black.
The third was red.
Dad stared at the red folder.
Harold noticed.
“You want to tell her?”
Dad shook his head.
“You do it.”
Harold sat down.
He looked at me.
“Natalie, your father came to see me yesterday afternoon.”
“I know.”
“He didn’t come to talk about money.”
I swallowed.
“What did he come to talk about?”
Harold opened the red folder.
“Your sister.”
I felt my stomach drop.
“What about Vanessa?”
Harold removed several sheets of paper.
“Your father discovered that Vanessa had been contacting people about selling the house.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
Dad nodded.
“She wasn’t planning to renovate it.”
Harold continued.
“She had already spoken with a developer.”
I couldn’t speak.
“She intended to sell the property immediately after your father’s death.”
I looked at Dad.
“How did she think she could do that?”
“Because she believed she would inherit it.”
Harold placed another document on the table.
“She had also discussed selling your father’s truck.”
Dad shook his head.
“And the fishing boat.”
I stared at him.
“The boat?”
Dad gave a bitter smile.
“Apparently everything has a price.”
Harold wasn’t finished.
“There’s more.”
He opened another section of the folder.
“Three months ago, Vanessa contacted your father’s bank.”
My eyes widened.
“Why?”
“She told them your father was becoming mentally incapable of managing his finances.”
Dad’s expression hardened.
“She wanted access.”
“And did they give it to her?”
“No.”
Harold looked at me.
“They called your father.”
Dad nodded.
“That was when I started paying attention.”
I sat down.
“So yesterday…”
“Yesterday,” Dad said, “I decided I was done waiting.”
Harold slid the blue folder across the desk.
“Your father signed everything yesterday afternoon.”
I opened it.
The first page was a legal document.
I read the first paragraph.
Then I stopped.
My hands began trembling.
“Dad…”
He looked at me.
“Keep reading.”
I did.
The document wasn’t simply a new will.
It was a trust.
A trust naming me as the primary beneficiary.
But there was another clause.
A very unusual one.
I read it twice.
Then I looked up.
“You left the house to me?”
Dad nodded.
“Yes.”
I couldn’t speak.
“But why?”
Dad’s face softened.
“Because you never asked for it.”
That sentence broke something inside me.
For years, I’d been convinced Dad secretly preferred Vanessa.
She lived nearby.
She attended family dinners.
She was there for birthdays.
She knew his neighbors.
I had always believed distance had made me the less important daughter.
But Dad continued.
“You were the one who called me every morning when your mother was sick.”
My eyes filled with tears.
“You were the one who flew home whenever I needed help.”
He looked down.
“You were the one who never asked what you’d get.”
I wiped my eyes.
“Dad…”
He shook his head.
“Let me finish.”
He looked directly at me.
“I didn’t change my will because Vanessa wanted less.”
He paused.
“I changed it because you deserved more.”
Harold looked away.
Even he seemed uncomfortable witnessing the moment.
Dad continued.
“But there’s one part you haven’t read.”
I looked down.
There was another page.
A handwritten note was attached to it.
Dad said quietly:
“Read that last.”
I picked it up.
The handwriting was unmistakably his.
My father’s hands had always been large.
The letters were uneven.
The first sentence read:
Natalie, if you’re reading this while I’m still alive, then something has gone terribly wrong.
I looked up.
Dad nodded.
“Keep going.”
I continued.
I have spent my whole life believing that children should never have to compete for their parents’ love. I was wrong. Sometimes parents create competition without realizing it. Sometimes one child learns to take while the other learns to give.
My vision blurred.
I kept reading.
Vanessa has spent years believing that being nearby makes her more entitled to me. You have spent years believing that being far away makes you less loved. Neither belief is true.
I stopped.
Dad looked at me.
“There’s more.”
I continued.
If Vanessa ever comes after the house, don’t fight her. Don’t scream. Don’t beg. Let the documents speak.
My heart began pounding.
Then I reached the final paragraph.

I slowly lowered the paper.
Nobody spoke.
Then Harold cleared his throat.
“There’s one more thing.”
He opened the black folder.
Inside were bank records.

Emails.
Property inquiries.
And one document dated six weeks earlier.
I read the amount.
My breath caught.
“What’s this?”
Dad didn’t answer.
Harold did.
“Your sister has been taking money from your father’s account.”
I stared at the page.
“How much?”
Harold gave me a grim look.
“Forty-eight thousand dollars.”
I looked at Dad.
His eyes were closed.
For the first time that morning, he looked old.
Not seventy-four.
Older.
Tired.
Heartbroken.
“Did you know?” I whispered.
“Not all of it.”
He opened his eyes.
“I knew some money was missing.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I wanted to believe there was an explanation.”
His voice cracked slightly.
“I wanted to believe my daughter hadn’t stolen from me.”
The room went silent.
Then Harold’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“Who is it?”
Dad asked.
Harold didn’t answer immediately.
Then he put the call on speaker.
It was the sheriff.
He had been called to my father’s house.
Apparently Vanessa and Grant were demanding proof that Dad was alive.
Dad laughed softly.
“Well.”
He looked at me.
“I suppose the funeral is canceled.”
But the sheriff’s next words wiped the humor from his face.
“Harold, you need to get here.”
“Why?”
“Because we’ve found something in the garage.”
Dad stood.
“What?”
The sheriff hesitated.
“A second set of property documents.”
Harold frowned.
“That doesn’t make sense.”
“It gets worse.”
“What do you mean?”
The sheriff’s voice became quieter.
“The documents appear to contain your father’s signature.”
Dad looked at me.
“But I didn’t sign them.”
Nobody moved.
The sheriff continued.
“And according to the date on the papers…”
He paused.
“They were signed three weeks ago.”
Dad’s face went pale.
Three weeks ago.
That was long before yesterday.
Long before Dad changed his will.
Long before Vanessa called me that morning.
Someone had been preparing to take control of my father’s life long before we knew anything was wrong.
Dad reached for the back of the chair.
For the first time since I’d known him, I saw genuine fear in his eyes.
“Harold,” he whispered.
“Yes?”
“Call the bank.”
Harold reached for his phone.
Dad looked at me.
“And Natalie?”
“Yes?”
“Whatever happens next…”
He swallowed.
“Don’t trust anyone who says they were trying to help me.”
Before I could answer, Harold’s phone rang again.
This time, the caller ID showed a number none of us recognized.
Harold answered.
“Hello?”
A man’s voice came through the speaker.
Calm.
Cold.
And completely unfamiliar.
“Mr. Pike?”
“Yes.”
“I believe you have documents that belong to my client.”
Harold frowned.
“Who is your client?”
The man paused.
Then he said a name that made Dad’s entire body stiffen.
“Vanessa Cole.”
Dad looked at me.
And I knew immediately that the story was nowhere near over.

Harold stared at the phone.
For several seconds, he didn’t respond.
The man’s voice came again.
“Mr. Pike, are you still there?”
Harold’s eyes moved toward my father.
Dad was standing completely still.
“Who are you?” Harold asked.
“My name is Richard Bell. I’m representing Vanessa Cole.”
Dad’s expression changed.
Not anger.
Recognition.
Harold noticed it.
“You know him?”
Dad nodded slowly.
“I know the name.”
Richard continued.
“My client has informed me that you’re currently in possession of documents belonging to her father.”
Harold’s eyebrows rose.
“Her father?”
“Yes.”
“My father’s name is Edward Cole,” Dad said.
Richard paused.
Then he replied carefully.
“Yes. Edward Cole.”
Dad stepped closer to the phone.
“Then you should know that I’m Edward Cole.”
Silence.
A long silence.
Then Richard said something that made my stomach tighten.
“I was told Mr. Cole passed away last night.”
Dad laughed bitterly.
“So was my daughter.”
Another pause.
“I see.”
“No,” Dad said. “You don’t.”
He looked at Harold.
“Ask him about the documents.”
Harold did.
“What documents are you talking about?”
Richard’s voice became guarded.
“The documents transferring ownership of the property.”
Dad’s face hardened.
“I never signed a property transfer.”
Richard didn’t answer.
Harold leaned forward.
“Then perhaps you should explain why your client possesses a document claiming otherwise.”
The attorney’s voice became colder.
“Mr. Pike, I’m not going to discuss confidential matters over the phone.”
“Then come here.”
“I don’t think that’s necessary.”
Dad smiled.
“It will be.”
Richard disconnected.
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Dad.
“Who is he?”
Dad rubbed his forehead.
“I met him once.”
“When?”
“About six months ago.”
“Why?”
Dad hesitated.
“He was introduced to me by Vanessa.”
Harold slowly closed the folder.
“Edward.”
“What?”
“You need to tell Natalie everything.”
Dad nodded.
“I know.”
He sat down.
Then he told me something I had never heard before.
Six months earlier, Vanessa had come to him with an idea.
She said she wanted to help him organize his estate.
She told him she was worried about what would happen if he became sick.
At the time, Dad had thought she was being responsible.
She brought Richard Bell to the house.
He presented himself as an estate attorney.
He prepared several documents.
Dad signed some papers.
But before signing anything important, Dad had asked Harold to review them.
Harold discovered problems.
“Some of the documents gave Vanessa authority over your father’s property,” Harold explained.
Dad nodded.
“So I refused to sign them.”
“What happened afterward?” I asked.
“Vanessa became angry.”
“How angry?”
Dad looked at me.
“She told me I was being stubborn.”
I felt a chill.
“Then what?”
“She said if I wouldn’t let her help me voluntarily, she’d find another way.”
I stared at him.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Dad looked down.
