The black SUV stopped directly in front of Teresa’s house.
Then a second one pulled in behind it.
The engines shut off almost simultaneously.
Nobody inside the living room spoke.
Rebecca Sloan walked to the window.
Her eyes widened.
“There are more of them than I expected.”
Mr. Mendez joined her.
“How many?”
“Eight.”
Daniel quietly exhaled.
“A full delegation…”
The front doors of both SUVs opened.
Men and women in business suits stepped out carrying leather portfolios.
None of them looked at the house.
Instead, every one of them looked at Ethan.
Rebecca opened the front door before they could knock.
A tall man with gray hair stepped forward.
“Good afternoon.”
He offered his hand.
“I’m Richard Holloway.”
Rebecca shook it.
“I wasn’t told the board chairman would be attending.”
“I changed my schedule.”
He smiled politely.
“I felt I should be here personally.”
He stepped inside.
The others followed.
No cameras.
No assistants.
No reporters.
Just eight executives.
Richard immediately walked toward Ethan.
He stopped a respectful distance away.
“Hello, Ethan.”
“Hello, Mr. Holloway.”
Richard smiled.
“You’ve grown since our last meeting.”
“I’ve grown two centimeters.”
A few people couldn’t help smiling.
“Still keeping records?”
“Always.”
Richard nodded.
“I expected nothing less.”
Karla folded her arms.
“And who exactly are all of you?”
Richard turned toward her.
“We represent the company that acquired Ethan’s software.”
“So?”
“So we have a legal and contractual duty to ensure the creator’s interests are protected while he remains a minor.”
Karla scoffed.
“My relationship with my son has nothing to do with your company.”
Richard answered calmly.
“It does when that relationship could affect agreements worth millions of dollars.”
Daniel looked up.
“Mr. Holloway…”
“Are you saying the company intends to participate in the custody case?”
Richard nodded once.
“If the court allows it.”
Teresa looked surprised.
“Why would you do that?”
Richard smiled gently.
“Because we didn’t buy only an application.”
He looked at Ethan.
“We invested in the person who created it.”
Silence settled over the room.
Richard opened a thin folder.
“When our engineers first met Ethan…”
He laughed softly.
“They expected a teenager excited about becoming wealthy.”
Several board members smiled.
“They were wrong.”
One woman stepped forward.
“My name is Angela Brooks.”
“I’m Director of Product Development.”
She looked at Teresa.
“On our second meeting, Ethan asked if we could make one change before launching the next version.”
Teresa frowned.
“What change?”
Angela answered immediately.
“He wanted every premium feature to remain free for children whose families couldn’t afford it.”
Karla looked surprised.
“He did?”
Angela nodded.
“We explained it would reduce company profits.”
“And do you know what Ethan said?”
Nobody answered.
Angela smiled.
“He said…”
“Kids shouldn’t lose help because their grandparents don’t have enough money.”
Teresa lowered her head.
Fresh tears rolled down her cheeks.
Richard continued.
“Then he asked us another question.”
He looked around the room.
“‘Can we hire my grandma as my official taste tester?’”
A few people laughed through their tears.
Teresa blinked.
“What?”
Richard chuckled.
“He insisted no update should be released until you approved the colors.”
Teresa stared at Ethan.
“You never told me that.”
“You said the blue buttons were too bright.”
“They hurt my eyes.”
“So we changed them.”
Angela nodded.
“We did.”
“And user satisfaction increased.”
Several executives quietly smiled.
Richard closed the folder.
“Over the last fourteen months…”
“We’ve attended meetings with Ethan.”
“We’ve watched him negotiate.”
“We’ve watched him reject offers.”
“We’ve watched him donate money anonymously.”
He looked directly at Karla.
“And not once…”
“…did he ask how to become richer.”
Karla shifted uncomfortably.
“He always asked how to help someone else.”
Daniel finally spoke.
“With respect…”
“My client’s past mistakes don’t change the fact that she’s his biological mother.”
Richard nodded.
“No.”
“They don’t.”
“But biology wasn’t the reason we came today.”
He removed a sealed white envelope from his briefcase.
Across the front were the words:
BOARD RESOLUTION – UNANIMOUS
Rebecca looked surprised.
“I’ve never seen that.”
“You weren’t supposed to.”
Richard handed the envelope to Ethan.
“It’s yours.”
Ethan looked at it but didn’t open it.
“What is it?”
Richard smiled.
“The board voted last month.”
“On what?”
Richard took a slow breath.
“On what we would do…”
“…if anyone ever tried to use your success against you.”
The room became silent.
Karla stared at the envelope.
“What does that mean?”
Richard looked at her steadily.
“It means that if the court determines Ethan is being targeted because of his wealth…”
He paused.
“…our company will ask permission to activate every protection available under the acquisition agreement.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What protections?”
Richard met his eyes.
“The kind that can freeze millions of dollars…”
He glanced toward Ethan.
“…until the court is absolutely certain those funds are safe.”
Karla’s confident expression disappeared.
For the first time since she walked into the house…
She looked worried not about losing an argument—

Just then, Rebecca’s phone vibrated once more.
She read the message.
Then looked at Thomas Whitmore on the television.
“The judge has issued one final instruction before tomorrow’s hearing.”
Whitmore frowned.
“What is it?”
Rebecca swallowed.
“He doesn’t want the hearing held in a courtroom.”
Everyone stared at her.
“He has ordered all parties to appear…”
She looked up from the screen.
“…inside Ethan’s old elementary school.”

“His elementary school?”
Teresa stared at Rebecca.
“Why would a judge do that?”
Rebecca read the order again, making sure she hadn’t misunderstood.
“I don’t know.”
“But the hearing is authorized under a judicial site inspection.”
Mr. Mendez slowly nodded.
“That makes more sense.”
Daniel frowned.
“What site inspection?”
Mr. Mendez answered without taking his eyes off the email.
“The judge wants to understand Ethan’s history.”
“He intends to hear testimony where much of it actually happened.”
Thomas Whitmore smiled faintly from the television.
“That’s exactly the kind of judge I hoped would be assigned.”
Karla shook her head.
“This is ridiculous.”
“A courtroom is where lawsuits happen.”
Whitmore calmly replied,
“And childhoods happen in schools.”
Nobody argued with him.
The next morning…
The parking lot of Desert Valley Elementary School was almost empty.
Summer vacation had begun weeks earlier.
The playground stood silent.
The swings moved gently in the morning breeze.
Teresa stepped out of the car and looked at the building.
“I haven’t been here in years.”
Ethan quietly adjusted his headphones.
“I have.”
She looked at him in surprise.
“You came back?”
“Sometimes.”
“Why?”

An elderly janitor walked outside.

The old man laughed.
“I knew you’d recognize me.”
“You always wore the same blue cap.”
Mr. Collins touched the brim of his faded cap.

He noticed Teresa and embraced her warmly.
“You raised a fine young man.”
Teresa smiled through nervous tears.
“I tried.”

Mr. Collins looked at Ethan.
“You succeeded.”
Karla watched the exchange from several feet away.

His voice was calm but firm.
“I’ve reviewed hundreds of pages of documents.”
He looked toward Ethan.
“I’ve reviewed photographs.”
“Medical records.”
“Financial records.”
“School records.”
He folded his hands.
“But papers don’t raise children.”
Silence settled over the library.
“So today…”
“I’m interested in people.”
He turned toward the clerk.
“Call the first witness.”
The clerk looked down.
“Mr. Samuel Collins.”
The elderly janitor slowly walked forward.
He raised his right hand and took the oath.
Judge Bennett smiled kindly.
“Mr. Collins…”
“How long have you known Ethan?”
The old man thought for a moment.
“About eleven years.”
“And Teresa?”
“The same.”
“And Karla Gomez?”
Mr. Collins looked toward her.
Then back at the judge.
“I’ve met her today.”
Karla stiffened.
Judge Bennett leaned forward.
“You never saw her at the school?”
“No, Your Honor.”
“Not once?”
“No, sir.”
Daniel quickly stood.
“Objection.”
“The witness couldn’t possibly remember every parent who visited.”
Judge Bennett nodded.
“Fair point.”
He looked back at Mr. Collins.
“Did you have a reason to remember Ethan?”
The old janitor smiled.
“I sure did.”
“What was it?”
“He always picked up trash.”
A few people looked surprised.
Mr. Collins chuckled.
“Every afternoon.”
“He’d finish class…”
“…then walk around the playground collecting candy wrappers.”
Judge Bennett glanced at Ethan.
“You enjoyed cleaning?”
Ethan answered honestly.
“No.”
“I enjoyed helping Mr. Collins.”
The old man laughed.
“I used to pay him.”
Teresa blinked.
“You did?”
“A dollar every Friday.”
Ethan quietly shook his head.
“I never kept it.”
Judge Bennett looked interested.
“What did you do with it?”
Mr. Collins answered before Ethan could.
“He’d sneak it into the cafeteria donation jar.”
The judge raised an eyebrow.
“The one for children who couldn’t afford lunch?”
“That’s the one.”
Judge Bennett wrote something in his notebook.
Then he asked a question no one expected.
“Mr. Collins…”
“In eleven years…”
“Did you ever witness Teresa lose patience with Ethan?”
The old man didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he smiled.
“Oh, she got tired.”
He looked at Teresa.
“She got worried.”
“She cried sometimes.”
“But she never gave up.”
The library became completely silent.
Then he added one final sentence.
“And there’s something I’ve never told anyone.”
Every head turned toward him.
“What is it?” the judge asked.
Mr. Collins looked directly at Karla.
“The last time Ethan asked me where his mother was…”
He paused, his eyes filling with tears.
“…he wasn’t asking because he wanted her to come back.”
The judge leaned forward.
“What was he asking?”
Mr. Collins swallowed hard.
“He wanted to know…”
“…if she might be happier without him.”
The words struck the room like thunder.
Teresa buried her face in her hands.
Karla closed her eyes.
Even Daniel slowly lowered his head.
Judge Bennett quietly set down his pen.
Then, after a long silence, he looked toward the clerk.
“Call the next witness.”
The clerk unfolded the next page.

“Your Honor…”
“I’ve never seen this before.”

“The next witness requested by the court…”
