PART 3

He held up a folder.

“This residence is legally owned by Natalie Brooks.”

Julian swallowed.

“We’re residents.”

“You’re occupants,” Harrison corrected calmly. “Not tenants.”

Khloe appeared behind him, still holding a wineglass.

“What’s going on?”

Then she saw me.

PART 4

The phone rang at exactly 8:12 the next morning.

I was standing in the kitchen making coffee while my mother watered the rose bushes through the open window. The house felt strangely peaceful after the chaos of the night before.

I answered without looking at the screen.

“Hello?”

“Ms. Natalie Brooks?” a woman asked.

“Yes.”

“This is Dana Mitchell from Lone Star Community Bank. I’m calling regarding several recurring transfers connected to the Martha Brooks Family Care account.”

I glanced toward my mother.

She was humming quietly to herself.

“I’m listening.”

“There appears to be approximately seventy-two thousand dollars withdrawn over twenty-four months. Because you’re listed as the funding party, our fraud department needs to determine whether those withdrawals were authorized.”

I closed my eyes.

“I’ll be there within the hour.”

My mother finally told me everything

The coffee sat untouched between us.

She held the mug with both hands but never drank it.
