She held out the bottle.

“Congratulations on the new place.”

I looked at the wine.

Then I looked at her.

Then, very slowly, I stepped aside.

“Come in, Jessica.”

She hesitated.

For the first time, uncertainty crossed her face.

The music was still playing softly in the background, but it suddenly sounded ridiculous.

A cheerful song.

At a housewarming party.

While my marriage was collapsing in front of thirty people.

My husband stared at Jessica.

“You’re lying.”

Jessica shook her head.

“I wish I were.”

“You’re lying because you’re angry with me.”

“No.”

She wiped her cheeks.

“I’ve been trying to get you to tell her the truth for three months.”

My husband looked at me.

“Emily, don’t listen to her.”

I almost laughed.

It was incredible how quickly his confidence had disappeared.
