That was when I began to cry again.

I took a slow breath.

“I want you to understand that you invited your mother and sister into a trip I had organized for my parents, then decided my parents should be excluded because your mother preferred it that way. You didn’t consult me. You didn’t defend the invitation. And when I objected, you called me unreasonable.”

Daniel looked away.

“I was trying to keep Mom happy.”

“And what about me?”

“You’re my wife.”

“Exactly.”

My voice remained quiet.

“Why does being your wife mean I’m expected to accept whatever makes your mother happy?”

He rubbed his face.

“You know how she is.”

“Yes, I do. That’s why I’m asking you to decide how you intend to handle it.”

He leaned forward.

“Claire, I can’t keep choosing sides between you and my mother.”

I looked at him for a long moment.

“I’m not asking you to choose between us. I’m asking you to stop treating your mother’s preferences as orders that I must obey.”

He said nothing.

I continued.

“My parents never asked you to put them first. They never demanded that you pay for their trip. They accepted an invitation from their daughter. If your mother wanted a separate vacation with you and Emily, she could have planned one. But she didn’t have the right to erase my parents from a trip I had organized.”

Daniel’s eyes hardened.

“So what now? You’re going to punish me forever?”

“No. I’m going to stop pretending this is a small disagreement.”

He stood up.

“If you want an apology, fine. I’m sorry you got upset.”

I felt something inside me settle.

“You’re sorry I got upset,” I repeated. “But you don’t seem sorry for what you did.”

He picked up his car keys.

Patricia sighed.

“Why are you making this about class? Nobody said your parents weren’t good enough.”

“You said they might not be comfortable in the restaurants and hotels.”

“I was being practical.”

“You also said Daniel’s family should come first.”

“Well, marriage does require priorities.”

“Yes,” I replied. “But my marriage is between Daniel and me. It isn’t a committee where you make decisions and he expects me to follow them.”

She went quiet.

Then her tone sharpened.

“Your father gave you that house, didn’t he?”

The sudden change caught my attention.

“What does that have to do with anything?”

“Daniel told me you were asking an attorney about selling it.”

I leaned back in my chair.

I almost smiled.

Emily adjusted the baby in her arms.

I felt my shoulders stiffen.

“I didn’t threaten to leave him over a vacation. I left because of how he treated me when I objected.”

My voice remained calm.

Daniel finally spoke.

I stared at her.

I looked at Daniel.

He stood abruptly.

Patricia looked offended.

“I know, but you’re not helping.”

It was the first time Daniel had challenged her in front of me.

For one brief second, I felt hope.
