“Shut up,” Jessica hissed, taking a sudden step forward before the shorter officer instinctively blocked her path with a forearm. “He’s delirious from the pain meds, officer. Don’t listen to him, he doesn’t know what he’s saying.”
Dr. Vance didn’t say a word.
She slowly reached down and gently helped Leo pull his navy shirt up over his good shoulder, turning his small back toward the open space between the reception desks.
There, written across his shoulder blades in thick, permanent black ink that had soaked slightly into his skin, were three lines of neatly printed instructions.

2. Cry when the police arrive.
3. Don’t mention the stairs at home.
The numbers were clear enough for everyone in the room to read without squinting.
The taller officer let out a slow, sharp breath through his nose and lowered his hand from my elbow.
The metal click of the key turning in the handcuffs sounded louder than the sliding doors behind us.

My credit card was still lying faceup on the linoleum by the billing counter, tucked beneath a dropped hospital pamphlet.
Leo looked up at me with wide, wet eyes, his cast resting awkwardly against his side.
I didn’t smile at him, and I didn’t try to offer any grand promises about how everything was going to be fine.
