My son Owen is five, and last week he brought home a family drawing from kindergarten. It was the usual kind of art kids make when they have a box of cheap wax crayons and a rainy Tuesday afternoon to burn. Me in orange crayon, holding his little hand. His baby sister Nora sitting in her high chair with a yellow blob for a bowl. Owen himself drawn with a green triangle body and hair sticking up like grass. But off to the right edge, crowded right up against the blue wax sky, was a fourth figure. Someone had scribbled over it in black so hard the wax tore a hole clean through the newsprint. When I asked who it was, he looked at his socks and whispered, “He said I can’t tell.” I don’t have a brother. My husband doesn’t either. Craig and I have been divorced for three years, and my life is just me, the two kids, and my shifts at St. Jude’s over in Marshalltown.
