Three days after my father died, my husband quit his job.

He didn’t ask whether I was ready for him to make such a decision. He didn’t ask how we would manage financially. He didn’t even seem particularly concerned that I was still trying to process the fact that my father was gone.

Instead, he sat at our kitchen table, drinking coffee in the middle of a Wednesday morning, and said something that changed the way I looked at him.

“Why keep working? Your inheritance should be enough for both of us.”

Then, as if the money were already sitting in our bank account, he told his mother he would buy her a house.

That was when he said it.

“Why keep working? Your inheritance should be enough for both of us.”

I stared at the empty chair across from him.

“What inheritance?”

He almost smiled.

“Come on. Your dad sold Hail Mechanical for millions. His house is paid off. He had investments.”

“How much do you think I’m getting?”

“Then how do you know it’s enough for you to stop working?”

He hesitated.

That word stayed with me.

Because it meant Mark had been thinking about numbers I had never even tried to calculate.

He could spend twenty minutes complaining about the price of furnace filters and then immediately change the subject if someone asked about his investments.

I knew he was comfortable.

I knew the sale of his company had gone well.

Mark apparently knew—or believed he knew—much more.

That evening, his mother Diane and his sister Melissa came over for dinner.

She stood and hugged him.

He looked prepared for a corporate meeting.

Not like a grieving son-in-law accompanying his wife to an estate attorney’s office.

More than two hundred people had filled the church the day before to honor my father, Walter Hail.
