The first thing my mother-in-law did was remove my daughters’ dinner plates while they were still eating, and she made no effort to be discreet about it. My husband, Grant, was hosting what he proudly called his “estate celebration” at a sprawling rented property outside Potomac, Maryland. Grant earned a respectable salary in regional sales for a technology supplier, but over the years, appearances became increasingly important to him. About a month before the party, Grant came to me because he needed additional money. His first solution was not to reduce the event or admit he had stretched himself too far, but to suggest that my family should help finance the lifestyle he wanted to display.

“Your mother has money sitting around. Ask her to help us temporarily.”

I told him my family might consider a formal arrangement, and a few days later, Grant signed paperwork documenting a $300,000 obligation. He barely read it before signing and seemed more interested in what the money could do for him than in understanding what he had agreed to.

“Your family should be happy to finally put money behind someone who knows how to grow it.”

I remembered that sentence very clearly. No enormous deposit ever appeared to rescue his finances, but his signature remained on documents he had willingly approved.

The catering agreement followed the same pattern. Grant insisted on the most expensive package available, complete with premium food, additional staff, live entertainment, and every decorative upgrade he could choose, while the contract clearly stated that the remaining balance would be due on the day of the party and personally guaranteed by him.

He signed that paperwork with the same confidence he brought to everything else. By the time Constance removed my daughters’ food and Grant told me not to cause a problem, I knew there was only one thing left for me to do.

I stood, took Noelle’s hand, and waited while Piper rose beside me. Grant noticed us preparing to leave and called across the lawn.

“Where are you going?”
