I shook it.
But I still didn’t accept the offer.
Not yet.
When I got home, Laura was sitting at the kitchen table.
Mia was asleep upstairs.
There was a bowl of soup covered with a plate waiting for me.
Laura looked at my face.
“What happened?”
I sat down.
“The CEO found out.”
“About the deductions?”
I nodded.
“How much?”
I told her.
She went quiet.
“Twenty-eight thousand?”
“Over six years.”
Laura stared at the table.
Then she laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because sometimes anger has nowhere else to go.
“You were going to let us lose twenty-eight thousand dollars and never tell me?”
“I didn’t know.”
She looked at me.
“I know.”
I reached for her hand.
“She wants me to stay.”
Laura didn’t respond immediately.
“Do you want to?”
“I don’t know.”
“What would you be doing?”
“Investigating the system that took the money.”
She looked at me carefully.
“And what happens if you find out it was worse than you thought?”
“I don’t know.”
“What happens if it wasn’t?”
“Then I leave.”
She nodded.
“Then there’s your answer.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“Don’t stay for them.”
She squeezed my hand.
“Stay only if you believe the work matters.”
I looked toward the stairs.
Mia had left a drawing on the refrigerator that morning.
Our family standing beneath a crooked yellow sun.
Four people.
Me.
Laura.
Mia.
And our old dog, Benny.
Underneath, in uneven letters, she had written:
HOME IS WHERE PEOPLE KEEP THEIR PROMISES.
I stared at it for a long time.
Then I looked back at Laura.
“I think I want to know how many people had to choose between their job and their groceries.”
Laura nodded.
“Then find out.”
The next Monday, I walked back into Hartwell Automation.
Not as an employee.
Not yet.
Evelyn had given me temporary authority as an independent internal reviewer reporting directly to the board.
My badge worked on every floor.
That alone felt strange.
But the strangest thing happened at 8:15.
Caleb found me near the service department.
He stopped walking.
“Daniel?”
“Morning.”
“You came back?”
“For a little while.”
His face lit up.
“Does that mean you’re staying?”
“I don’t know.”
He lowered his voice.
“Did they ask you to investigate payroll?”
I looked at him.
“How did you know?”
He glanced around.
“Because yesterday three people from Finance were asking questions.”
“About what?”
He hesitated.
Then said,
“Something happened Friday night.”
“What?”
Caleb pulled out his phone.
“Frank got fired.”
I froze.
“Why?”
“They said he falsified a service report.”
My stomach tightened.
“Did he?”
Caleb shook his head.
“No.”
“How do you know?”
“Because I was there.”
He looked at me.
“And Daniel…”
“What?”
“Frank told me before they escorted him out that he had proof.”
“What proof?”
Caleb looked around again.
Then he whispered,
“He said the person who changed his service report wasn’t Derek.”
I felt the room suddenly become very quiet.
“Who was it?”
Caleb swallowed.
“He said it was Grant.”
I stared at him.
Then my phone buzzed.
An email had arrived.
From the chairman of Hartwell’s board.
The subject line contained only five words:
Daniel, We Need To Talk.
And underneath it was one attachment.
A spreadsheet.
Six years of employee compensation adjustments.
But there was one column I had never seen before.
Executive Approval.
I opened it.
And my hands went cold.
Because the first name on the list wasn’t Derek Cole.
It was Grant Hart.
