She handed one envelope to my father.
“It’s addressed to you.”
He opened it carefully.
The handwriting belonged to my late grandmother.
His mother.
He began reading silently.
Halfway through, his eyes filled with tears.
“What is it?” Mom asked.
He passed the letter to her instead of answering.
She read it aloud.
“Richard, I worry that you don’t see Olivia the way she deserves to be seen. She becomes quieter every year while everyone praises the louder child. One day the quiet one will stop asking for love, and that will be the greatest loss this family ever suffers.”
The room became completely still.
The letter was dated twenty-two years earlier.
Grandma had seen it.
Everyone except my parents had seen it.
Ruth folded her hands.
“She asked me not to interfere unless it became necessary.”
She looked at my mother.
“I think it became necessary.”
Mom couldn’t speak.
Camille stood suddenly.
“I’m tired of everyone acting like I’m the villain.”
Nobody answered.
She continued anyway.
“You all think I stole one party?”
She laughed bitterly.
“You have no idea what it was like growing up either.”
I looked at her.
“For the first time, tell the truth.”
She nodded slowly.
“Mom always compared me to you.”
Everyone frowned.
“She told me Olivia was smarter.”
“She said Olivia was more responsible.”
“She said I had to shine because Olivia would always be the dependable one.”
I blinked.
“What?”
Camille’s tears spilled over.
“I wasn’t trying to become you.”
She shook her head.
“I spent my whole life trying not to disappear beside you.”
The confession shocked everyone.
Including me.
Favoritism had damaged us differently.
I had been loved for what I could provide.
Camille had been praised for how she appeared.
Neither of us had been loved simply for being daughters.
For the first time in years, we looked at each other without competing.
Just two women carrying different versions of the same wound.
A week later, Hannah’s school announced its annual Family Heritage Project.
Students needed one adult woman in the family to interview about resilience.
Everyone assumed she would choose Camille.
Instead, Hannah wrote my name.
At the presentation, she stood in front of her class holding a photograph of us baking brownies.
“My Aunt Olivia taught me that kindness is what you do when nobody is clapping.”
Camille sat beside me in the audience.
She quietly reached over and squeezed my hand.
I squeezed back.
Not because everything was fixed.
Because healing had finally begun.
Autumn arrived.
My parents invited everyone to Thanksgiving.
I almost declined.
Then an envelope arrived in the mail.
Inside was a seating chart.
Every guest had an assigned chair.
Mine was beside the fireplace.
At the very top, under the title Hosts, were four names printed in equal lettering:

No speeches.
No explanations.
Just names.
When I arrived wearing the same red dress, my mother greeted me at the door.
Before anyone else entered, she handed me the serving spoon.
For one nervous second, I thought history was repeating itself.
