I gave him everything.
The forged signature.
The company documents.
The bank records.
The threatening texts.
Liam’s statement.
He looked through the papers carefully.
Then he said:
“We have enough to act.”
“Will my son be arrested?”
“That depends on what the investigation finds.”
I nodded.
“What about Jessica?”
“Same answer.”
I looked at him.
“I don’t want revenge.”
“Good.”
“I want my money protected.”
“That’s exactly what we’ll do.”
He began making calls.
By noon, the bank had frozen the disputed transfers.
The credit-card company had opened a fraud investigation.
The company registry had been notified of the forged documents.
And my attorney had sent formal notices to the people involved.
The wedding venue was notified that I was no longer responsible for any future payments.
The florist.
The caterer.
The photographer.
The rental company.
Everything was transferred to Liam and Jessica.
If they wanted the wedding, they could pay for it.
If they couldn’t, they could cancel it.
For the first time in two years, the decision belonged to them.
At 4 p.m., Jessica called.
I didn’t answer.
She called again.
Then again.
Finally, she left a voicemail.
Her voice was shaking.
“Nancy, please call me.”
I deleted nothing.
I saved everything.
Then another voicemail arrived.
“You don’t understand what happened.”
Another.
“Liam is lying to you.”
Another.
“Your son is trying to destroy our marriage.”
I listened to the last one twice.
Then I called her.
She answered immediately.
“Nancy!”
“What?”
“Where is Liam?”
“I don’t know.”
“He’s not answering me.”
“That sounds difficult.”
“You need to tell me what you did.”
“I didn’t do anything.”
“You canceled everything!”
“No.”
“You did!”
“I stopped paying.”
“That’s the same thing!”
“No.”
I paused.
“It isn’t.”
She began crying.
“You’re ruining my life.”
“No, Jessica.”
I looked out the window.
“You were planning a life you couldn’t afford.”
Silence.
“You talked to Liam.”
“Yes.”
“What did he tell you?”
“Enough.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means I know about the company.”
She stopped breathing for a moment.
Then:
“What company?”
“Carter Family Holdings.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
I almost admired the speed of the lie.
“You’re sure?”
“Yes.”
“Then perhaps your attorney can explain it.”
Silence.
“You’re threatening me.”
“No.”
I smiled sadly.
“I’m informing you.”
Then I hung up.
Saturday morning arrived.
The wedding was scheduled for 4 p.m.
At 10 a.m., I received an email from the venue.
Wedding canceled.
No explanation.
Just two words.
I expected to feel victorious.
I didn’t.
I felt tired.
I went downstairs.
Maya was sitting at the kitchen table.
She looked at me.
“So?”
“They canceled.”
She nodded.
“How do you feel?”
I thought about it.
“Relieved.”
She smiled.
“Good.”
Then my phone rang.
It was Susan.
I answered.
“Hello?”
She was crying.
“Nancy.”
“What happened?”
“Jessica left.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
“Are you safe?”
“Yes.”
“Then what’s wrong?”
“She left me with the hotel bill.”
I closed my eyes.
“What hotel bill?”
“Six thousand dollars.”
I almost laughed.
“I’m sorry.”
Susan began crying harder.
“I know I have no right to ask you.”
“You’re right.”
“I just don’t know what to do.”
I was silent.
Then I asked:
“Do you still have the email?”
“Yes.”
“Keep it.”
“Why?”
“Because you’ll need it.”
“Are you going to help me?”
I looked at the coffee mug in my hand.
“I can help you find an attorney.”
Susan exhaled shakily.
“Thank you.”
“But I won’t pay the bill.”
“I understand.”
And for the first time, she sounded as though she truly did.
