She said nothing.

For the next hour, I sat outside Tommy’s room.

I didn’t check my phone.

I didn’t call my friends.

I didn’t think about work.

I just stared at the hospital door.

Eventually, a nurse came out.

“Dad? He’s asking for you.”

I stood so quickly that my chair fell backward.

When I entered, Tommy was lying on his side with a blanket pulled up to his chest.

“Dad?”

“I’m here, champ.”

“Are you mad?”

I sat beside him.

“Mad about what?”

“What do you mean?”

Tommy swallowed.

“Who, sweetheart?”

He looked toward the door.

“Mom’s boyfriend.”

I froze.

Lauren had told me she wasn’t seeing anyone seriously.

She had mentioned a friend named Derek once or twice, but she always described him as someone who occasionally helped around the house.

I had never met him.

I had never even known he stayed overnight when Tommy was there.

“Tommy, did Derek hurt you?”

My son started crying.

Before he could answer, the child protection specialist entered the room.

She gently reminded me not to ask him more questions.

“We need to let him speak in his own words, at his own pace. You’ve done the right thing bringing him here.”

I nodded.

Then she sat beside Tommy.

“Hi, sweetheart. My name is Sarah. I’m here to help you. You don’t have to answer anything you don’t want to answer. You’re not in trouble.”

Tommy looked at her.

“Will my dad stay?”

Sarah smiled.

“If you want him nearby, we’ll make sure you feel safe.”

He nodded.

I moved to the chair beside his bed.

“Why does he have my son’s bag?”

“What?”

He lowered his voice.

I looked through the glass window toward Tommy.

He was finally sleeping.

For the first time in months, his little hands were relaxed.

I turned back to the detective.

“Please tell me you’re going to find out the truth.”

He nodded.

“We intend to.”

Then he added one sentence I would never forget.

“Mr. Andrew, there’s a possibility this situation began much earlier than the day your son was brought to you.”

I felt the room become colder.

“What do you mean?”

The detective opened his folder again.

“We found a report from Tommy’s school. It was submitted several weeks ago, and it appears someone tried to raise concerns about his behavior.”

I frowned.

“What report?”

He turned the page toward me.

And when I saw the name of the person who had submitted it, I stopped breathing.

I looked at the detective.

“Who wrote this?”

He pointed to the signature.

“According to the school’s records, Mrs. Carter submitted this concern to the school counselor. She documented several changes in Tommy’s behavior, including his sudden fear of going home on certain days, difficulty concentrating, and repeated requests to stay at school.”

“Did the school contact Lauren?”

“They followed their internal procedures. We’re still investigating what happened after that.”

I shook my head.

“My son was asking for help, and nobody told me?”

The detective didn’t answer immediately.

“Mr. Andrew, I understand you’re angry. But right now, our priority is making sure Tommy is safe.”

I looked through the hospital window.

My son was sleeping.

He had no idea how many adults had failed to understand his silence.

And I promised myself that I would never let him feel alone again.

The following morning, Mrs. Carter arrived at the hospital.

She was carrying a small paper bag with a stuffed dinosaur inside.

When she saw me, her eyes immediately filled with tears.

“Andrew, I’m so sorry.”

I stood up.

“Why didn’t you call me?”

She looked down.

“I tried to raise the concern through the school. I documented what Tommy told me, but I wasn’t given permission to discuss the details of the report with you. I was told the matter was being handled.”

“Handled?”

My voice was louder than I intended.

“My son ended up in an emergency room!”

Mrs. Carter began crying.

“I know. And I wish I had done more.”

She sat down and placed the dinosaur on the chair.

“Do you know what Tommy told me two weeks ago?”

I shook my head.

“He came to my desk after class. Everyone else had already left. He asked me whether teachers were allowed to keep secrets.”

My stomach tightened.

“What did you tell him?”

“I told him that I could listen to him, but that if he was being hurt or was unsafe, I would need to find adults who could protect him.”

She wiped her eyes.

“He looked at me and said, ‘Then please don’t tell my mom I talked to you.’”

I closed my eyes.

Mrs. Carter continued.

“I reported what he said. I didn’t want to frighten him by asking too many questions. I thought the proper people would follow up.”

I looked at the little dinosaur.

“Thank you for noticing him.”

She nodded.

“I only wish someone had listened sooner.”

That afternoon, Tommy woke up.

He saw the dinosaur beside his bed and smiled faintly.

“Is that for me?”

I nodded.

“Mrs. Carter brought it.”

He held the toy against his chest.

Then he whispered:

“Dad, am I going to have to go back?”

I pulled my chair closer.

He looked at me carefully.

“Promise?”

The detective paused.

“We found messages between Derek and Lauren.”

My hands tightened around the phone.

“What kind of messages?”

“Messages discussing Tommy’s behavior, his fear, and what they wanted him to say if anyone asked questions.”

I couldn’t speak.

The detective continued.

“Some messages also suggest that Lauren knew Tommy was being harmed and failed to protect him. We’re having the evidence reviewed by the appropriate investigators.”

I leaned against the wall.

For months, I had been told that I was imagining things.

That I was jealous.

That I was a bitter ex-husband who couldn’t accept that his marriage was over.

“Can I see them?” I asked.
