I looked at Bonnie.

“Why would this be attached to a marriage license?”

Bonnie shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

I folded the paper.

I looked up.

She had stopped calling me Mrs. Tolley.

She looked at me like a woman instead of a customer.

“Don’t confront him until you know what you’re dealing with.”

I almost told her I didn’t need advice.

There was always a point where explanations became excuses.

I walked through the hospital doors.

I stood.

“Do I know you?”

He glanced around.

“I’m David.”

“David Carter. Jeremy’s crew.”

My stomach tightened.

“You work with Jeremy?”

“Sometimes.”

He sat across from me without asking.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

That sentence frightened me more than anything else that day.

“Why?”

He rubbed both hands over his face.

“I thought you knew.”

“Knew what?”

He stared at the table.

Then he said quietly,

“About Lacey.”

I felt my throat close.

“What about her?”

David looked up.

“She has cancer.”

The room seemed to go silent.

I couldn’t hear the coffee machines anymore.

I couldn’t hear the people talking.

I could only hear those two words.

“She has cancer?”

He nodded.

“Stage four.”

I gripped the edge of the table.

“How long?”

“I don’t know.”

“Jeremy knows?”

David looked at me like the question was ridiculous.

“Jill… Jeremy has been driving here every Tuesday for almost three years.”

I closed my eyes.

Three years.

The parking stub.

The tired face.

The Tuesday silence.

The extra long hugs.

I opened my eyes.

“Why didn’t he tell me?”

David didn’t answer.

“Why did he marry her?”

He looked at me.

“I don’t know if I should be telling you this.”

“You already started.”

He looked toward the hospital doors.

“Lacey didn’t want to die alone.”

I stared at him.

“What does that have to do with Jeremy?”

“Everything.”

He lowered his voice.

“She wanted one thing before she died.”

“What?”

“To be his wife.”

My heart twisted.

“Why?”
