PART 3

My mouth went dry.

“Could there be two?”

“There could,” she said carefully. “But not with the same Social Security information on the filing.”

I stared at her.

“You checked?”

“I did.”

She lowered her voice.

“I knew something wasn’t right when you came back yesterday.”

I looked down at the certificate again.

The date was three years ago.

Three years.

Not last month.

Not last year.

Three years.

I thought about all the Tuesdays.

All those Tuesday nights when Jeremy had driven to Nashville.

All the times I had stood at the kitchen window watching his truck disappear down our road.

All the times he had come home tired, kissed my forehead, and said, “Long day, Jill-girl.”

Three years.

I had been making his pork chops while my husband was apparently married to another woman.

I looked at Bonnie.

“Does this mean my marriage isn’t legal anymore?”

Bonnie’s expression changed.

“No, honey.”

She paused.

“This doesn’t tell us that.”

“Then what does it tell us?”

“It tells us that your husband entered into another marriage three years ago.”

The word another hit me harder than I expected.

Another.

Not second.

Not mistake.

Another.

I put the certificate back into the envelope.

My hands were shaking now.

Bonnie pushed a tissue box toward me.

I almost laughed.

“I’m not crying.”

“I know.”

She said it gently.

“Sometimes the crying comes later.”

I took the envelope.

“How much do I owe you?”

“You already paid.”

I nodded.

Then I turned to leave.

I made it six steps before Bonnie called after me.

“Mrs. Tolley?”

I stopped.

She came around the counter.

“There’s something else.”

I turned.

She looked uncomfortable.

“There was an amended filing attached to the record.”

“What kind of amendment?”

“I can’t tell you everything without pulling the supporting document.”

“Can you pull it?”

She hesitated.

“I can.”

“Please.”

Bonnie returned to her desk.

I stood there waiting.

A minute later, she came back holding another sheet.

She handed it to me.

The document was dated six months after the marriage.

It wasn’t a divorce.

It wasn’t an annulment.

It was a name change request.

The bride’s name had been changed.

From Lacey Burcham…

to Lacey Tolley.

My stomach dropped.

She had actually taken his name.

I stared at the page until the letters blurred.

Then I noticed something else.

An address.

Nashville.

A medical facility.

The same facility printed on the parking stub I had found in Jeremy’s truck.

Vanderbilt.

I looked at Bonnie.

“Why would this be attached to a marriage license?”

Bonnie shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

I folded the paper.

“Thank you.”

“Jill.”

I looked up.

She had stopped calling me Mrs. Tolley.

She looked at me like a woman instead of a customer.

“Don’t confront him until you know what you’re dealing with.”

I almost told her I didn’t need advice.

But I did.

So I nodded.

“Okay.”

I walked out.

This time, I didn’t sit in the car immediately.

I stood beside it and looked at the courthouse.

Same building.

Same brick.

Same flag.

Same parking lot.

A place where people went to get married, get divorced, file paperwork, pay fines, record deeds.

And somehow, for twenty-two years, I had believed the most important thing my husband had ever signed was our marriage license.

Now I knew better.

I got into the car.

I didn’t call Jeremy.

I didn’t text him.

I didn’t call Lacey.

Instead, I drove to Nashville.

I had no plan.

I just knew I had to see the address.

The drive took nearly an hour.

The whole way, my mind kept inventing explanations.

Maybe someone had stolen his identity.

Maybe someone had forged his signature.

Maybe there was another Jeremy Lee Tolley.

Maybe Lacey was sick.

Maybe he had helped her with something.

Maybe—

No.

I stopped myself.

There was always a point where explanations became excuses.

I had spent three years making excuses for Tuesday nights.

I wasn’t going to make another one.

When I reached Vanderbilt, I parked in the visitor garage.

I walked through the hospital doors.

People moved around me carrying coffee, flowers, backpacks, paperwork.

A child slept against his mother’s shoulder.

An old man sat in a wheelchair beside a window.

A nurse hurried past me.

Everything was painfully normal.

I went to the information desk.

“I’m looking for a patient,” I said.

The woman looked up.

“Name?”

I hesitated.

“Lacey Burcham.”

She typed.

Then stopped.

“Lacey Tolley?”

My heart slammed against my ribs.

“Yes.”

She typed again.

“She isn’t admitted today.”

“Was she here recently?”

“I can’t give you patient information.”

“I’m her…”

I almost said friend.

Then sister.

Then family.

None of them were true.

I was the first wife’s wife.

I walked away.

I found a coffee shop inside the hospital and sat in the corner.

I ordered nothing.

For nearly forty minutes, I watched the elevators.

Then a man in blue scrubs came through the doors.

He stopped when he saw me.

I didn’t recognize him.

He recognized me.

His face changed.

He walked over slowly.

“Jill?”

I stood.

“Do I know you?”

He glanced around.

“I’m David.”

Nothing.

“David Carter. Jeremy’s crew.”

My stomach tightened.

“You work with Jeremy?”

“Sometimes.”

He sat across from me without asking.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

That sentence frightened me more than anything else that day.

“Why?”

He rubbed both hands over his face.

“I thought you knew.”

“Knew what?”

He stared at the table.

Then he said quietly,

“About Lacey.”

I felt my throat close.

“What about her?”

David looked up.

“She has cancer.”

The room seemed to go silent.

I couldn’t hear the coffee machines anymore.

I couldn’t hear the people talking.

I could only hear those two words.

“She has cancer?”

He nodded.

“Stage four.”

I gripped the edge of the table.

“How long?”

“I don’t know.”

“Jeremy knows?”

David looked at me like the question was ridiculous.

“Jill… Jeremy has been driving here every Tuesday for almost three years.”

I closed my eyes.

Three years.

The parking stub.

The tired face.

The Tuesday silence.

The extra long hugs.

I opened my eyes.

“Why didn’t he tell me?”

David didn’t answer.

“Why did he marry her?”

He looked at me.

“I don’t know if I should be telling you this.”

“You already started.”

He looked toward the hospital doors.

“Lacey didn’t want to die alone.”

I stared at him.

“What does that have to do with Jeremy?”

“Everything.”

He lowered his voice.

“She wanted one thing before she died.”

“What?”

“To be his wife.”

My heart twisted.

“Why?”
